Alien Shadows - Development in the Shadows of Matchstick City

The primary intent of the Alien Shadows project is to provide information about homebrew game development for software developers that are new to the indie scene.  Platforms will range from consoles such as the Sega Dreamcast to PC based systems.  The material presented on this site assumes you have a solid grasp of programming concepts.  What you won't find here is a flashy website as I'd rather spend the time developing games.  The main focus is about building games and using tools others have created to assist in homebrew development.

I've made progress in setting up a development environment for both the Sega Dreamcast and the Nintendo Game Boy Advance.  Check out the links on the left to find out more.  A more frequently updated source of information is available on my blog where I discuss problems I have encountered during the development process.   My hope is that providing information about the problems encountered during the learning curve will prove to be useful to the others like myself who are in the process of branching into indie game development.

The first project for the Game Boy Advance will be to create a clone that is loosely based off an arcade classic.  Note: I've started work on a Satan's Hollow clone that can be found in the Game Boy Advance section.  Classic arcade games from the 80's usually have enough variation to allow making use of a number of the different features on each platform but aren't overly complicated. I don't intend on making the clone strictly platform independent as my main goal is to learn about the architecture and processors of each platform. It will likely turn out that I work on different games for each platform, depending on what features from a specific game lends itself well to learning the specific architecture being investigated.
